The Politics Behind "Only 31% Voted for BJP in 2014"
India is World's Largest Democracy, with 800+ Million eligible voters it's just a miracle to conduct a free & fair elections in such a diverse country. Commendably Election Commission of India (ECI) is doing this job since 1951 when first General Elections were held in the country. Many westerners argued that this exercise will fail but ECI & Indian Citizens are proving them wrong again & again!! Elections & Choice of The People for a country which was under foreign rule for centuries is very important as it reinforce the true meaning of the word FREEDOM!!
But since 2014 there are questions raised on the process of elections & in turn the choice of an Ordinary Indian. If one din't win an election, he/she/it has no right to question the win of the other side. But sadly this has been the very case right from 16th May 2014 where Opposition (& many others) parties have started to say that only 31% of Indians voted for BJP while 69% rejected it. This is completely false argument & any such argument is like questioning the vary process of Elections in India. This argument false flat because of following points:
- India is Multi-Party Democracy with More than 700 registered parties & many Independents fighting the elections. For One Party to get more than 50% vote (simple majority) is almost impossible in this picture.
- India follows "Past The Post" where winner is the one who takes the most votes (even if that is just one more vote than the second contender). Thus, it's not a necessity that the winner should have more than 50% votes always. In elections where there 40+ contenders in every seat, it isn't possible to get simple majority of votes.
- Since Congress lost it's Pole Position in Indian Polity in late 1970s & early 80s...No party has ever got more than 50% of Vote Share in an General Election. Forget General Elections, even in a state election, 50+% Votes is like a Miracle!!
This is the stat on how the Party fared in last 30 years elections from whom the Prime Minister was elected......
2014 - 31.34% VS
2009 - 28.55% VS
2004 - 26.53% VS
1999 - 23.75% VS
1998 - 25.59% VS
1996 - 8.08% VS
1991 - 35.66% VS
1990 - 7.95% VS
1989 - 17.79% VS
Thus, if you check the above figures then in last 30 years, only PV Narismha Rao got more vote share than what Modi got in 2014. Thus, questioning the VS of Modi/BJP will be equal to questioning the Prime Ministership of last 7 PM's this nation has seen......
Surprising is that such question was never raised earlier....than why now? The answer can be in the fact that Modi/BJP's win in 2014 is not a fluke & the Man & the Party are here to stay for a long time....Since you can't beat them in the Game why not CHALLENGE the rules of the game itself??
Though, this may be a good strategy but for long term questioning the Indian Democracy itself will have huge impact & will give negative perception about India to the world & will give an opening to the enemies of India to attack it!!
India is powerful because of It's Democracy, it is a must that all political parties, Indian citizens & all institutions should take steps to strengthen it & not weakening it or else one is playing in the hands of India's enemies.
